Inspiration – is sometimes just one click away

On Dads Poker Blog, I try to post once a day, usually on weekdays. I like to include in the post some of my thoughts, experiences and revelations learned about poker, either by playing or studying or watching. Some of what I write, I hope is either interesting, entertaining, instructive or thought provoking.

Some days are harder than most when it comes to fresh or interesting ideas to discuss. Sometimes I look back and rehash an idea with a different perspective based on new experiences.

Prior to writing my post for the day, I usually follow a routine of checking my email, twitters, and looking at, or reading Chris Brogan’s Blog. This morning was no exception.

Most all of his blogs are great (I say this sincerely, even though he is my son), but his blog was “spot on” for me. His post was titled “You are the Captain”. His ideas and thoughts are just what I needed today.  You can read the entire post by clicking here.

Of late my poker ship has been rudderless. I have been adrift in a sea of  lassitude and stuck in a sand bank of morass.  My sails have no air. I am missing my oars. Well, you get the picture. I have been playing in Sit n Go’s of little or no value, cash games below the level that I know I can play in and in tourneys that are not good choices for me. It is time for me to once again become the captain of my poker ship and start shipping those cash games, tourneys and Sit n Go’s. Full speed ahead – avast ye poker donks – my ship is bearing down on you!

Note: Chris Brogan is the older of my two sons, Thom is the younger. Both are fine young men.

    Thanks for the great post.

    Chris is a fine man. I know he's really proud of you. His life is a testament to you as a father. You obviously did a great job raising him. Thanks! He's a an inspiration to many people including me.

    Nice. My 14 year old son loves watching anything that employs strategy. Among his other interests, he watches poker on television. This baffles me, and often concerns me, because I am a literature, music, art kind of girl. I now feel a little bit okay about being able to point to a professional player and say, “Son, THAT'S a decent man. He's raised decent men. You can follow him.”

    Let me know when you play a televised tournament – I'd love to have him watch.

    That is very sweet..A family that respects and loves each other is THE only thing that matters in life. I'm trying to get my father to blog now that he is retired. He is getting motivated now that I am working for my brother and set up a blog for him.

    You are most kind. I someday hope to make it to a televised tourney and would be happy to let you know. There is an ongoing debate about poker. Is is gambling or is it a skill. Based on the dozens of books that I have read and the 50 or more that I need to read, I would say that skill is very important to a professional.

    Getting your dad to embrace the new technology and methods of communications can have many added benefits including keeping his mind alert and younger despite his physical age. You are only as old as you think. Age is just a number. Thanks for your comments!

    It means you're going to up a level! Congratulations and play well (I'm not going to wish you luck, just wish you to play well ;) ).
    Great metaphor by Chris (I love metaphors).

    Then had a good trip, In the sea you can crash in the “rocks” or be attacked by “sharks” but you can also take your rod and get a lot of “fishes” out.

    If you keep your eyes on the lighthouse, you'll arrive to an island where with “eagles” eyes and “lions” fierce, “elephants” and “donkey's” meat would be your dinner every night.

    Imanoth, thank you for your comments. It is my intent to play well. I hope that my skills will not require any more luck than usual. Hopefully, 90%+ skill and some luck. Hope to you at some of the #TPT's later this year.

    I read Chris' post last night and felt the same way. Rudderless, and going through the motions. I wish you and your poker-vessel much success! Even if you don't make a ton of money as a professional player, you have a wealth of good experiences, are sharing your skill with others and at the end of the day have great fortune as the proud papa of a pirate. Arrrrrgh!
